Time to step off the curb, whether it is comfortable or not. And this is what this thread should be all about. We can all get around the notion that, if we were paying attention, we would have realized that money was buying NCs at an increasingly alarming rate and that the allure of UF wasn't what it used to be.īut in all "State of the Union" addresses, while you take time to talk about the recent past, you also talk about the vision of the future. I know it is an easy target but I continue to say that THE biggest brain fart of the recent past was the hiring of Mullen. Stricklin was hired to continue Foley's trend and he was also regarded as a very good fundraiser. My guess (hope?) is that the truly heavy hitters still embrace these traits. But to me, UF has always stood for academic excellence (at least in the realm of public universities) with enthusiastic support for sports, especially football. Truth in "journalism" left the building a LONG time ago. No one is going to be able to correct the outsiders' takes because we "know better".

Not that the NIL is everything but it plays into a lot of it.

And to the article, we can also say with some anecdotal certainty that alpha males today are tuned into current events and not past legacies. I also believe we looked unsophisticated (or worse) in the Rashada mess. Now all this is in the rear view mirror and as everyone should know, hindsight is 20/20. He sold the monied people the idea that there were more pressing needs than football facilities. I can't comment whether it was the Presidents who dictated this mantra to Foley or their thoughts aligned with his, but it was definitely the philosophy of his tenure. I go back to what I think was Foley's take: football is the blob who can and WILL eat an athletic department if allowed, and if not careful it will bankrupt (financially and/or morally) a university. The easy picking is UF, with two NCs not too far in the past. We can say with some scholarship that money has always been involved whereas it is now blatant. It pretty much is about how the landscape is changing in major college football (and somewhat in basketball) and it is ALL about the money. lots of ways to spread out your subscriptions these days.Since this thread is about rehashing old stuff, well then why not? their longform content (Ink) is great.Īll that said, i don't blame anyone for dropping it or only paying during seasons they enjoy. There are ways to get good deals, which is why i keep it up. their march madness coverage (bracket) stuff is good. they have one of the best sports business writers out there (Kaplan), same for sports media (Deitsch.) they have Dane Brugler. but they added some really good F1 writers I enjoy. CFB is probably the weakest of the sports i follow over there. Their approach to the State of Texas CFB and having basically 1 dude be the "beat writer" for all the Texas schools isn't great. i don't love their CFB guys but i enjoy their baseball writers and the local beat writers for the sports i follow more closely.
